Death Announcement: Mbugua, Alex

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Alex Mbugua.

Mbugua passed away on Tuesday 14th Nov, 2006 after a long illness.

Alex Mbugua was born in 1958, in Kirangari, a small village in Kiambu district. He joined Kirangari Nursery School in 1964. In 1965 he joined Kirangari Primary School and in 1978, he completed his form four (12th grade) in Kirangari Secondary School. Mbugua was the fourth born in his family.

Mbugua grew up as a child in a family of artistic. In 1980, he joined Kenya Christian Training College where he graduated in graphics, textile designs, interior and external decorations and screen-printings and other courses. In 1994 he joined the Banana Hill Art Studio where he started his training in fine arts.

He participated in his first workshop with Banana Hill Art Studio under the guidance of Shine in 1994. By 1997, his first four paintings work were displayed and sold by Gallery Watatu.

In collaboration with other artists from the Banana Hill studios, he participated in many other workshops and cultural exchanges. In one of the those , his created his first sculpture which was entitled "Two in One".

His work has been showcased at numerous solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally. His subjects were diverse, and portrayed his community’s social and cultural activities. “I am inspired by African women in our society”, he said.

Friends, relatives and fellow artists are meeting at his home in Mukui, Karura.

The Funeral will be on Tuesday 21st November 2006 at the same venue.
