Old Town Art Exhibition
By Miriam Syowia Kyambi

Exhibiting in old town is an honor for it is a historic space; now being recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. Collectively we the artists are hoping that by exhibiting in the Jahazi coffee shop located within old town it will encourage more visitors to pass through not only the exhibit but through old town and  get a chance to experience it’s heritage.

Some of the artists involved in this exhibit organized a previous event in 2006 located at both the TAAM shop and the Jahazi coffee shop.  This project was inspired by the innovative thinking of Abdallah Ali Mohammed owner of the TAAM shop. His main objective was to bring different people together sharing different ideas.

We believe this is the beginning of conducting annual art exhibitions within old town. Hopefully in the future we will be expanding our exhibition locations allowing for exhibition viewers to stroll through old town whilst looking at art, ultimately allowing for more artists to be involved.

We are hoping that this will open the doors for more artistic avenues and opportunities to exist on the Mombasa Island. Our other objectives are not only to promote art and artists living and working on along the coast line but also bringing artists together.  We are hoping to encourage networking and creative thinking and through this the generation of new ideas.

These exhibitions are self motivated and artist funded projects which wouldn’t have taken place without the support of Abdallah Ali Mohammed owner of the TAAM Shop and George Killeen joint owner of the Jahazi coffee shop along his partners Aziz and Naheed.

This year’s exhibition brings together eleven different artists from different personal and professional backgrounds. This show consists of a mix match of artists; some who have exhibited internationally some who have exhibited only within Mombasa, some who are self taught and others who have gone through professional art training.

Further more artists are coming from different counties including Kenya, England and the U.S.A. Some have been creating works for several years and other who have just started out as professional artists. There is no particular theme involved in this year’s exhibit but generally artists seem to be inspired by their surroundings, and express it through their emotions or their physical locality.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition and look forward to seeing you next year! The exhibition runs from 18th March to Saturday 31st March.
