Urban Art; Sanaa Noma
By Beatrice Ndungu/ Africancolours.com
A showcase of urban creativity is on display at the GoDown art centre. The exhibition titled Sanaa Noma opened on the 12th of May. It features graffiti artworks, pieces from the Maasai Mbili signwriters’ from Kibera ‘Matatu art’ drawings by Point Blank.
Kota Otieno, from the group ‘Maasai Mbili’ shows what he refers to street and ghetto art which comprises of sculptures and graffiti. Influenced by Kamal Shah at an early stage, Kota likes to think of himself as a different kind of artist “My art comes from within, I use oil on canvas and metal to do my pieces.” says Kota, whose last exhibition was at Java Coffee house in downtown.
He has special counsel for artists who live in Nairobi slums and especially Kibera, the biggest slum settlement in Africa “let them discover their talents, and exhibit their works. That way they will move from the slum life to the real world.”
“Beauty” is what Maryanne Muthoni calls her art. Muthoni who has exhibited her work widely is inspired by her environment. The GoDown tries to celebrate different art forms. We came up with a theme ‘celebration of urban expression’ which we developed a step further so that the people who are not highlighted the most in the art industry like graphic artists and hip-hop artist can be seen.
That is the key thing about the Sanaa Noma exhibition” summarises Judy Ogana, the managing Director of the GoDown. The Sanaa Noma exhibition runs until the 25th May. Entrance is free and all are urged to come and indulge their urban art senses.
