AfricanColours Third Gallery Walk

AfricanColours is organizing their third Gallery Walk scheduled for the 29th September 2007. This is our 2nd Gallery Walk for the year 2007. We plan to make it an entertaining bigger and better event for all our participants. Our last Gallery Walk was held in April.

We visited the Alliance Francaise gallery, Rahimtulla Museum of Modern Art (RaMoMa), the GoDown Arts Centre, Paa ya Paa and the Green Art Sculpture Garden in Kitisuru.

Our Participants who comprised of artists, art enthusiasts, students, long term and newly arrived residents/ expatriates joined us in what turned to be an exciting day.

The tour was co-hosted by popular Kenyan artists Mary Ogembo and Thom Ogonga, both artists based in Nairobi.

The aim of the Gallery Walk is to increase the visibility and presence of the arts in Kenya and throughout Africa by introducing our participants to the visual art scene in Nairobi and its environs. Our Gallery Walk mission is to familiarize our participants with contemporary African art, interact with the artists in their studios and purchase art works along our journey.

Our voyage will start by meeting at the AfricanColours office at Chester house, Koinange Street for registration. We will then proceed to THE MURUMBI GALLERY. Joseph Murumbi and his wife Sheila were among Africa's foremost collectors.

Their collections of books (several thousand printed before 1900), postage stamps, textiles, art, sculpture and jewellery are now finally displayed on the ground floor of the Kenya National Archives in the new Murumbi Gallery, which opened on December 6th, 2006. The Curator at the National Archives will be at hand to take participants round the premises as well as available to answer all our questions during this visit.

African Heritage House

Our ultimate destination will be to the most photographed house in Africa, Alan Donovan’s house in Athi River. Alan Donovan was a co-founder of African Heritage, the continent's first pan-African gallery in Nairobi which became a pioneering craft retail and wholesale operation.

Through his work he discovered and revealed to the world Africa's rich cultural legacy and beauty. Alan’s residence is in itself a unique art gallery with collections of artifacts from all over the African continent ranging from masks to fabrics to paintings and sculptures.

This visit will be very exciting as Alan himself will take us through his own personal journey of collecting these now very valuable art pieces in his possession.

We will have lunch at Alan’s place before heading back to the city center at about 4.00pm and in good time for those who will be coming from far.

AfricanColours will organize transport to and from all the venues that we will be visiting. A registration fee of Ksh 1300 for adults and Ksh 800 for children will be payable to AfricanColours Ltd at our offices in Chester house 1st floor, Koinange Street.

To avoid disappointment make reservations and payments ASAP, we anticipate a large group. Reservations will be made on a first come first served basis
