UNESCO Animation Initiative
By Andrew Njoroge/AfricanColours.com

The United Nations Scientific, educational, scientific and Cultural organisation [UNESCO] in Nairobi has launched a training programme aimed at producing animated features for broadcast in Kenya. The television feature’s running under the banner Africa Animated will be aired on local channel KTN.

Animators from several African countries are expected to be involved in the production to give it (series) a continental look and feel. The production centre for the animated feature will be in Nairobi.

This initiative according to the UNESCO communications director Mr Alonso Aznar is aimed at supplementing the production capabilities of local TV stations facing difficulties producing local programmes due to various factors like inadequate numbers of technically competent animators, producers, and creatives.

The productions which will have entirely African themes are expected to be popular with the local market according to Tom Mshindi Standard groups CEO.

He said his company is keen to be involved with any initiative that would help in improving the standards of local production. Mr. Mshindi pledged The Standard group’s resources to support any such initiative.

One of the most experienced Animators that Africa has produced is Kwame Nyongo. He is part of the team that is producing the Africa Animated series and going by what AfricanColours has seen of his other projects; we are betting our last very penny that this will be the media project of the year. Watch this space for more news about the project.
