The just concluded Art is Everywhere, waste-to-art international workshop 2008 took place at the FCT Art and Culture (Cyprain Ekwensi Centre) in Abuja, Nigeria.

The workshop which was declared open by the Director, Social Development Secretariat Hajia Nana Sokwa included five visiting artists from Uganda, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Zambia as well as other local artists. The Director of National Art Gallery, Nigeria was represented by the head of curatorial services Mr. A Muku.

Art is Everywhere is an annual recycling workshop project that focuses on waste-to-art initiative. It was initiated in 2005 by Ayo Adewunmi in collaboration with the Alliance Francaise Enugu.

Mr. Adewunmi the founder of Art-is-everywhere describes the project as seeking to open up the creative minds of young artists to the endless possibilities in their immediate environment, provide an avenue to train artists and the less privileged in the society on how to make a living from recycling, to generate exchanges between local artists and artists from other countries and to highlight environmental degradation.

The third edition of Art is everywhere was held in July 2007 at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu. The progressive successes of the workshops necessitated the opening of the workshop to more participants, particularly artist from the northern Nigeria.

This was made possible during Art is Everywhere 4 & 5 through the sponsorship from the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development and the Alliance Francaise in Jos and Kaduna.

The workshops provided opportunities for the participants to create with recyclable materials and be resourceful using waste in their environment. Participants had the advantage of working with objects and waste materials peculiar to their locations.

Participating artists were expected to create artworks from wastes during the workshop and also present a paper on the situation report on waste-to-art recycling in their country.
