The Preacher Besides his Sleek Car

A white South African street preacher who prefers to be known as Ziggy, dressed in Zulu traditional attire reads the Bible beside his Mercedes Benz next to a street in Johannesburg. The preacher parks his sleek car besides various streets in the city to pray, preach or read the Bible. His car number plate reads "Mjita" which means friend in Zulu. Biography:  Wairimu Gitahi

Wairimu Gitahi is a freelance documentary photographer and radio journalist and has a keen interest in social documentary photography. At present she is studying photojournalism and documentary at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg. This is a year-long course which she began in January and will complete in December 2010.

Her aim as a photojournalist is to tell the world about the creative ways in which Africans tackle various social issues that many African countries often find themselves in. In so doing, she hopes to honor the struggles of those who smile through the pain of life’s challenges and also present lessons that others may learn from them.

In order to present these stories truthfully, she sees the need to continuously improve her skills hence her current enrollment at the photo workshop

Wairimu was born in 1978. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications.
