Oil Paint: Portraits and People
Press Release | Oliewenhuis Art Museum

An exhibition, titled Oil Paint: Portraits and People, was installed recently on the first floor of Oliewenhuis Art Museum. The artworks were selected from the Art Museum’s Permanent Collection with the aim of showcasing South African artists’ diverse use of oil paint as medium as well as their approach to depicting people.

Portraits and People

The oil paintings were created during the 1920s to 2000s and vary from traditional and realistic portraits to more expressive and experimental depictions of people. Artists such as Erich Mayer and Maud Sumner represent the South African masters while more recent artworks are represented by well-known contemporary artists such as Reshada Crous (known for her portraits of famous South Africans), Walter Meyer, Wayne Barker and Pauline Gutter (from Bloemfontein).
