Domboramwari Art Village International Residency & Exhibition

Since its inception with a national art workshop and exhibition in September 2007, Domboramwari Art Village (DAV) has gone several steps further by conducting their first ever international art residency program with seven countries represented in a three month long inter-cultural mix up.

Since becoming a member of the Triangle Arts Trust a couple of months ago, things have improved drastically with financial support for the residency also coming from Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development and the Ford Foundation.

The art village has completely changed from what it was four months ago in terms of structural development. A number of structures have been built using natural materials like stones and wood found on the vast piece of land with balancing rocks, caves and a thick forest.

DAV now has the capacity to house more than 15 artists at one go and that enabled them to host 17 artists who have been working there since October 2007.

Working with the theme Judgment in their mind, Steven Diseko from Botswana, Tom Phiri from Zambia, Tei Huagie from Ghana, Natalie Duveau from France, Kola Joseph from Nigeria, Fanual Fish from South Africa and Zimbabweans Rocky Ndumo, Tendai Dlamini, Allan Kakova, Taurai Gondo, Mildred Taruvinga, Primrose Tshuma, Jairos Chivaura, Trymore Chigata, Hilda Taruvinga, Cresta Jinga and Wellington Moffart worked hard on various new mediums until the open day that took place on December 15 2007.

Dubbed “Judgment”, the exhibition of the art works opened on the same day as thee Open Day and was officiated by delegates from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe whom included the director Mr Titus Chipangura, Zimbabwe immigration office members, journalists and other invited guests.

The work produced during the whole three months is amazing; the artists from outside Zimbabwe had the opportunity to have the feel of the famous Zimbabwean stone and even local textilists and ceramists gave it their own.
