Press Release: Salah Amar & Simon Muriithi
By Africancolours.com

23 October 2006 Nairobi, Kenya: AfricanColours.com, the premiere Internet web portal for Contemporary African Art, presents an exhibition at the Village Market by two of Kenya’s most talented artists: Simon Muriithi and Salah Amar.

“We are excited to bring together two artist’s whose work we have admired for such a long time,” states Andrew Njoroge, AfricanColours.com Director. “Although Simon and Salah’s work is very different, they both have a strong sense of color, boldness and narrative strength.”

Salah Amar is a painter, whose abstract work contains the energy of traditional rock paintings. Using vibrant colors, bold lines, and shadow techniques Salah creates images of contemporary art with a timeless and ancient quality.

“I look at many influences for my art,” states Mr. Amar. “There are modern and urban references such as graffiti as well as an obvious nod to the ancient art form of rock and wall paintings, found here in Kenya and in my native Sudan.”

Mr. Amar was born in El Dueim in Sudan. He graduated at Sudan University's college of fine and applied art in 1994 with a degree in fine art. He went on to stage two successful solo exhibitions in Khartoum, Sudan; he has also exhibited his work throughout Kenya, Germany, the USA and France.

Building each piece layer by layer of color, Simon Muriithi is one of Kenya’s most prolific and extensively exhibited artists. Muriithi has traveled and exhibited throughout Africa, Europe and America thanks to his talent as an artist as a result his work is appreciated by both local and international art collectors. Simon has a superior colour sense, whimsical style and a skillful stroke, often using a pallet knife.

“I am addicted to Art,” states Mr. Muriithi, when asked why he is an artist. “To me everyone is born an artist. I was born an artist and it is who I am. I paint for the society, for anyone.”

This follows AfricanColours.com philosophy of bringing art to a wider African audience. “Although we ‘live’ on the Internet, we want to play an active role in supporting exhibitions in Kenya and throughout Africa,” says Jacquie Munene, the newly appointed Projects Manager for AfricanColours.com

“It builds the art community which will help create new artists, new art spaces and expand contemporary African art presence in all mediums, including online.”

Simon Muriithi/Salah Amar” exhibition will be on display Tuesday, October 24 through Monday, October 30, 2006 at the at the Village Market Gallery located in the Gigiri area of Nairobi Kenya.

This exhibition has been supported by AfricanColours.com
