Blueness Ebbs - Showing At RaMoMA
By a Correspondent

This series explores the relationship of oceans; the Indian and Atlantic oceans. I have been fascinated by the contrast of the cool colours of the Atlantic and the hot greens and tourqoises of the Indian ocean.

Whilst all these paintings represent the sea, I feel that I am painting a reoccurring subject; flowers in a garden, people on a beach and in this case, the butterfly shapes of sails on an ocean... colour on colour... my usual inspiration but in this case a slightly muted palette represents the colours of the Atlantic. - Mary Collis

In the tradition of seascape painting I have focused on the force of the waves on the shore and the local fishermen. The sheer physicality of making the painting in the field is a joy. Over the last few years my job with the Red Cross has pushed me more to being a travel painter visiting new places and getting more “spatial thrills” an expression used by David Hockney talking about Turner’s painting!. I think it’s a good expression when one considers the huge spaces we have here in Kenya.

"Nature has a randomness you can’t predict. The way a wave breaks on the shoreline... you have to observe things very closely to notice them." - Sophie Walbeoffe

Each year at about this time, RaMoMA has a fund raising event to keep us going until the end of the year. Our funding runs out in October.  Sophie and Mary are having this exhibition, especially to fill the shortfall. Please be aware if you buy a work, that your purchase is essential to RaMoMA, and we thank you for your patronage.
