Call To Ratify Convention On Cultural Diversity
By a correspondent

The endorsement of the ‘Convention on protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions’ has drawn support from every corner of the globe.
In its message of congratulations, the International Network for Cultural Diversity (INCD) lauded UNESCO and its member States, as 148 countries worldwide voted in favour of the convention’s final text.
This new legal instrument recognizes the value of cultural diversity to national and global well being, and also acknowledges that cultural goods and services have more than an economic value.
But, the Convention is one step in a long campaign to achieve cultural diversity, and to prevent trade and investment agreements from eroding the right of States to support their own artists and cultural producers.
INCD is calling on governments who voted in favour to ratify the Convention and make it as effective as possible by stepping up commitment and include the Convention's provisions into their bilateral and multilateral cultural agreements.
This support is a guarantee that developing countries have access to resources they need to convey their stories, music, films and works of visual art to local and global audiences.
