Anthony Wakaba Mutheki has taken the South African Art scene by storm. Simply known as ‘Tony’ he was born in Nakuru, Kenya in 1973, he began drawing and painting at a young age, like most children in Africa.
Since technical subjects received a lot of attention in Kenyan schools under the 8-4-4 system of education,Tony managed to obtain the fundamentals of fine art, woodwork and metalwork in both primary and high school. After school Tony completed a two-year course in house construction, draft-man ship and a course in fashion design.
Always having a strong urge to travel and experience other cultures, Tony left Kenya to spend several years traveling to 19 different African countries, Dubai, France and the United States before coming to South Africa in 1996. During his travels, Tony developed a strong love for the continent and diverse people of Africa , firing up his skill of capturing his people and their emotions on canvas. Tony was chosen as one of 39 artists from around the world to take part in the recent collaboration between them and former South African president Nelson Mandela, together with artist such as Willie Bester, Marlene Dumas, Beezy Bailey, Sam Nhlengethwa and Velaphie Mzimba. He is based in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.
