By a Correspondent
Twenty-eight artists from sixteen nationalities were selected to take part in the 9th edition of the biennial of African Contemporary Art (Dak’Art 2010) to be held from May 7 to June 7 in Dakar, the event’s organizing committee said.
The international jury, composed of a pool of five commissioners, approved the selection after the consideration of 318 files by artists from 38 African countries according to a statement copied to APA.
In accordance with instructions from the steering committee of the Biennial, the jury was designed to selected artists without regard to their geographical identities.
"The selection basis include criteria of technical quality of works and their aesthetic innovation in contemporary design", said the jury, stressing that they had put aside in this year’s selection all artists selected for the "IN" of previous editions, from 1992 to 2008, to facilitate the emergence and recognition of new talents in African contemporary creation.
The 2010 edition of the Dakar Biennial will be held under the theme "Retrospective and Perspective". There will be an exhibition entitled "Retrospective", in tribute to the winners of the eight previous editions.
"The exhibition "OFF" of the Biennial will be even better supported in order to promote the rich diversity of creative styles, but also collective or individual artistic initiatives," the organizers said.
