Africa United: The Road to Twenty Ten
By Andrew Esiebo

The FIFA World cup showcase begins on June 11 2010 in South Africa, organized on the African continent for the first time.

African journalists and photographers will be telling us about  the impact of  football on the African continent in the book "Africa United:The  Road  To Twenty Ten." The book presentation will be held on15 April 2010 in the Amsterdam Arena.

Africa United- The Road to 2010

The book cover

The first copy will be offered to football players Eyong Enoh and Maarten Stekelenburg, both playing for Ajax, who will become temporary opponents when the Netherlands will be playing Cameroon in Cape Town.

Speakers at the presentation include Andrew Esiebo (Nigeria), Stefan Verwer (The Netherlands), Guy Berger (South Africa) and Chris Bode (The Netherland).

The book shows a football-crazed continent on the road to South Africa. The book is filled with stories and images by African photographers and journalists showing the passion for football in Africa, it shows the continent in a way not often portrayed: full of  talent, ambition and possibilities.

Besides describing the love for  football in Africa, this book  also portrays the social context of football in Africa. Success in sports enhances the dignity and pride of the African people.   It unites peoples, even in times of war.

Africa United introduces us to Africa's football-crazed presidents, superstar athelete Haile Gebrselassie’s passion for football, and also shows us the important role that Didier Drogba and George Weah have played in  bringing about peace in Ivory Coast en Liberia. Naturally star footballers like Michael Essien and Salomon Kalou also have their say in this book.

The book has been compiled by Dutch journalists Stefan Verwer and Marc Broere, together with photographer Chris de Bode. This book is part of the Twenty Ten project and was made possible with cooperation from KIT Publishers.

Africa United will be launched on 15 April 2010 by 13Hrs in the Amsterdam Arena and will consequently be available through the KIT Publishers  www.kitpublishers.nl.
