2010 Africa Salutes You: Mandela Football Flags Exhibition
By Neliswa Hlombe

The 2010 Fine Art Collection - originally scheduled to run until the 31 July at SUNCOAST  - draws to an early close this weekend.

Its final weekend runs concurrently with another art exhibition at SUNCOAST which will honour the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on the weekend of his 92nd birthday, and in the wake of South Africa’s superb hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Mandela Flags Exhibition

Launching for one weekend only, the 2010 Africa Salutes You Mandela Football Flags Exhibition will be hosted at the East Coast Radio stage at SUNCOAST from Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 July  from 10am to 10pm.

Africa Salutes You is a collection of artworks commissioned by the grandchild of Nelson Mandela, H.R.H. Nkosi, Zwelivelile Mandlesizwe Dalibhunga Mandela (Mandla Mandela).

The 32-piece Mandela Football Flags exhibition features limited edition prints of the 32 flags of all the participating countries of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The designs were created by South African artist Athol Moult, with colouring and detail completed by the children of the Mvezo community of the Eastern Cape, where Tata Madiba was born 92 years ago.

Moult had been invited to create a youthful and exuberant body of work that  celebrated South Africa’s participation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He worked with the youth of Mvezo, the 32 qualifying nations and Mr. Mandela himself to design and create the works.

All prints carry Nelson Mandela’s signature and will undoubtedly become collector’s items.

Pieces will be on sale at R8 550 each or R273 600 for the full 32-piece collection. All prints sold are enclosed in a beautiful gift presentation box and include a certificate of authenticity.

Proceeds from sales of the art will go towards the Mvezo community, which is directly involved in the project and is responsible for the allocation of funds to the five pillars of Mvezo´s self help strategy.

The projects they have identified are the building of the Mvezo Pre School, the High and Primary School upgrades, modernising the existing clinic facility and various community services projects. Through this project the community has already begun the building of the community centre´s ablution, kitchen and laundry facility.

Closure of 2010 Fine Art Collection

Powered by the 2010 Fine Art Consortium, 2010 Fine Art marked the first time in the eighty year history of the FIFA World Cup™ that a licence had been granted to display fine art on this scale and as part of FIFA’s Official Licensed Products.

The exhibition has been running in the SUNCOAST Zone since 2 June and now closes around two weeks shy of its original closure date of 31 July. It has seen more than 10 000 locals and tourists passing through to view and purchase collector’s prints, painting and sculptures created by leading contemporary artists from across South Africa, Africa and the 32 participating nations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Most of the sales were to local art lovers and soccer fans.

Discounts on Art Items

To mark its closure by Sunday 18 July, the 2010 Fine Art Collection at SUNCOAST will offer a 10% discount to those still keen to get their hands on some of the soccer-inspired pieces. The works draw inspiration from Africa, the FIFA World Cup™, and their country’s own national pride, represented in the artists’ styles of choice.

The pieces include limited edition prints of works by artists as diverse as Kenyan painter, Josiah Waiguru Gitau-Taju, South African photographers, Dennis Guichard and Clinton Strydom, American illustrator Michael Kupka, South Korean emerging artist Charles Yang, Gustavo Fernandes of Portugal and Briton Ed Gray.
