Movies that Matter Festival

The Movies that Matter Festival is the annual film festival on human rights and social justice in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice. This film and debate festival is the successor of the Amnesty International Film Festival. It features the best of recent filmmaking related to human rights and human dignity and serves as a platform for debate and discussion.

The next edition of the Movies that Matter Festival takes place 24th-30th of March, 2011. We would like to welcome you to submit your film(s). The final deadline is 15th of October, 2010.

There are no restrictions on genre or length; long or short fiction, documentary, music video, animation are equally welcome provided that the film was made after 2008 and has clear human rights relevance.

Main Sections

The Movies that Matter Festival has two main sections:
* A Matter of ACT presents documentaries on and debates with human rights defenders
* Camera Justitia focuses on films and debates on international law, transitional justice and the fight against impunity.

Therefore, Movies that Matter especially welcomes films about human rights defenders and international law and justice. Activists and directors of the selected films in these competitions will be invited as guest for the festival.

Awards

The festivals presents six awards with a total amount of money price of € 20.000:

GOLDEN BUTTERFLY - Amnesty International's A Matter of ACT award € 5.000
GOLDEN BUTTERFLY - Amnesty International's A Matter of ACT documentary award € 4.000
SILVER BUTTERFLY - Camera Justitia Award for best film on law and justice € 3.000

MovieSquad All Rights Award of the young people's jury € 2.000
Students' Choice Award € 1.000
VARAgids Audience Award € 5.000

Movies that Matter Foundation

Movies that Matter is a foundation established in Amsterdam in 2006 - springing from the Film Festival Department of Amnesty International in The Netherlands. Movies that Matter believes that films, by capturing social responsibility, can engage viewers in a dialogue about human rights and the threats to human dignity. Using such a lens, Movies that Matter aspires to raise awareness and fight human rights violations, both national and international.

Movies that Matter is the home base for various activities. Besides the Movies that Matter Festival it realises a human rights programme at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), educational programmes and monthly human rights film and debate programmes in a network of ten Dutch theatres. Committed to the support and promotion of human rights film screenings worldwide, Movies that Matter offers an extra stimulus to the wider circulation of human rights films in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
