Museum for African Art & MoCADA present: African Fashion Now
Press Release

In our increasingly globalized world, many people and businesses have livelihoods connected to trade, energy, resource development, assistance, and humanitarian efforts in African regions.

Over the course of ten programs, spanning eight months, a variety of lectures and discussions will stimulate dialogue about how artists, writers, social entrepreneurs, and other leaders are challenging and expanding our understanding of what is currently happening in African countries.

Thursday, October 14, 6:30pm - 8:00pm
FREE

MoCADA, 80 Hanson Pl, Brooklyn, (718) 230-0492

New York's fashion week brings designers from around the world to Bryant Park. How are African publishers and designers a vibrant part of this scene? Oroma Elewa creator, editor and visual director of Pop'Africana delivers "a rejuvenated image of Africa" and documents "the endeavors and achievements of Africans, home and abroad".

Brenda Brunson-Bey began to create outerwear and women's accessories in the early 1980's. In 2003, she opened her own store with her designs entitled, The Tribal Truths Collection, which is located on South Oxford Street in Fort Greene.

These speakers will also create a conversation regarding their roles in the fashion industry and how they are challenging common perceptions of Africa.

What are some of the more common perceptions seen in the media?

How do our differing life experiences and perspectives offer alternate ways of understanding these concerns and suggest possible solutions?
