MoCADA announces its Curatorial Fellowship, made possible through the generous support of the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Lambent Foundation, to foster emerging curators of African descent in the curatorial field. From an open competition, two individuals will be selected to come to Brooklyn, New York for the year-long program to be immersed in the conceptual and practical methods necessary in working as a museum curator.
The successful candidates will work full-time at MoCADA from February 2011 to February 2012. With the guidance of the Exhibitions Director, the fellows will be led through the process of developing an exhibition idea into an exhibition proposal, and the realization of the exhibition proposal in a gallery space.
They will also have weekly discussion sessions, attend artist talks, and be introduced to MoCADA's professional network through a schedule of site visits to local institutions, artist studios, and symposia. All of these aspects will be integral to the fellows experience as they work to curate their own exhibition at MoCADA at the culmination of the fellowship.
The program's goal is to provide emerging curators with professional training to become socially, politically and aesthetically well informed productive contributors to the museum field, and the field of art at large.
MoCADA is uniquely positioned to establish a curatorial fellowship, having a mission that is based in arts-inspired curatorial and educational programming relating to the African Diaspora. Since its inception, the Museum has provided hands-on vocational and educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
In celebration of MoCADA's 10th Anniversary, it seeks to expand the scope of its exhibition program by creating a learning initiative geared specifically to burgeoning curators of African descent.
The Curatorial Fellowship is organized by MoCADA's Exhibitions Director, Kalia Brooks, who recently joined MoCADA after serving as the program facilitator for Independent Curator International's (ICI) inaugural Curatorial Intensive in New York City.
Brooks is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Photography and Imaging at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and a PhD Candidate in Aesthetics and Art Theory with the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts.
Application Guidelines: Applications must include a 300-word description of an exhibition idea. Submissions should include an exhibition concept or key idea, and any artists that the applicant is considering. Also required is a current resume, two professional recommendations (these can be mailed directly to MoCADA), a 1 page writing sample, plus a short letter of intent that outlines why applicants want to participate in The Curatorial Fellowship, which should include a brief description of a recent exhibition that has made an impact on the applicant.
Application Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum of a BA or BFA in Art History, Studio Art, or other related field with a specialized interest in African/African American/African Diasporan visual arts.
MA or MFA preferred, but not required.
Application Deadline: November 22, 2010 (postmark date). Email applications must be received by midnight.
Stipend: The program comes with a $25,000 stipend and a small travel allowance.

The Curatorial Fellowship has been generously supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Lambent Foundation. MoCADA is committed to fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of the arts and cultures of the African Diaspora as it relates to contemporary urban issues.
The experiences and cultural contributions of people of African descent have been marginalized throughout history and MoCADA's mission is to undertake the responsibility of rewriting that history in order to give a more accurate portrayal of the contributions of people of African descent to the artistic and global landscape.
