125 Years of Gold Mining Commemorated with Mining Indaba Art Exhibition
Press Release

This year is the 125th anniversary since the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, an event that led to the biggest mining rush in African history and substantially changed the course of South Africa’s history.

Cape Town-based artist Jeannette Unite has been dealing with mining and it legacy in her large-scale drawings, paintings and prints for over a decade. At the Mining Indaba 2011, which runs from 7 – 11 February this year, she will present a body of works and launch a special series of art prints that will examine this event and trace it’s history.

Unite is known for using discarded mineral material from mines in her work which she uses as the basis for creating her striking images of headgear and other representations of the mining industry. She has visited numerous mines in South Africa and the rest of the African continent doing research, gathering material and drawing and photographing the workings and traces left behind by mining.

In creating this unique and timeous body of work the artist seeks to draw attention to the lasting legacy that mining and it’s results have left on South Africa and how the lure of gold – for good as well as bad – has changed us all.

The Mining Indaba exhibition will lead to a larger series of works that will be displayed locally in March 2011, exactly 125 years after the first discovery by the geologist Harrison in Johannesburg.
