International Design Education Conference

Announcement and Call for Abstracts and/or Papers

The Sixth International Design Education Forum conference is hosted by the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture & Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre at the University of Johannesburg.

Theme: 20/20 Design Vision

In 2011, the Design Education Forum of Southern Africa is celebrating its 20th anniversary and in so doing, marks an important milestone in its reflection on design education from the past, present as well as visions for the future. The conference theme - 20/20 Design Vision, offers participants the opportunity to focus on many interesting and engaging debates that range from an overview of the state of Design Education in the last 20 years to more importantly to offer visions beyond the present.

DEFSA encourages cross- and multidisciplinary or peripheral design education debates presented by academics, researchers and practitioners that incorporate a wide spectrum of research methods and approaches associated with design teaching, learning and research.

Sub-Themes

Potential conference participants are required to present original research that addresses the conference theme; 20/20 Design Vision, and the conference sub-themes as presented below. Presentations should aim to stimulate new thinking, present insights and/or reflect on different perspectives and viewpoints, communicate innovative conceptual frameworks and propose alternative solutions or new opportunities for design education. Papers can present either a critical analysis of detailed case studies, as lessons learnt, or explore and embrace the panoramic and peripheral aspects that contribute to discussions around the conference theme.

1.    Reflective vision - "Hindsight is always 20/20" Billy Wilder

•    Cross- and/or multidisciplinary collaboration with “the other” disciplines
•    Synergies with peripheral disciplines or activities

4.    Future vision: Future projections and strategies for design education
•    New approaches/perspectives for design education teaching and learning
•    Research methods and methodology for design education research
•    Evolving or emerging design education disciplines
•    New design education paradigms

•    Double blind peer reviews are undertaken of all papers prior to the conference and feedback presented to authors prior to conference presentation. Papers that are not accepted may not be presented at the conference.
•    A panel of reputable national and international academics and subject experts will be established to conduct the peer review. A list of peer reviewers will be published in the conference proceedings.
