The Index: 40 Leading Works from the Sanlam Art Collection
By a Correspondent

One of South Africa’s most important corporate art collections, the Sanlam Art Collection, will exhibit a selection of 40 leading works at Oliewenhuis Art Museum from 19 April to 22 May 2011.

The Index: 40 Leading Works from the Sanlam Art Collection exhibition includes carefully selected works that are important representations of a subject or period in art history and represent the entire time span covered by the Sanlam Art Collection, from the late 19th Century to the present. Many of these works haven’t been seen outside of Sanlam for more than two decades.

The exhibition is presented by Sanlam Private Investments, the private wealth management company in the Sanlam Group.

The exhibition will be opened by Stefan Hundt, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection at Oliewenhuis Art Museum on Tuesday, 19 April 2011 and Stefan Hundt will also present a walkabout of the exhibition at 10:00 on Wednesday 20 April 2011.

Hundt says, “since 1965, the acquisition of artworks has always been done with advice obtained from respected independent experts in the field. When making acquisitions, a set of relevant criteria are followed, backed by experience and knowledge. As a result the collection has over the years acquired a considerable number of historically important South African works.

Sanlam prides itself in being able to share these rich treasures with all fellow South Africans. The Index exhibition is a continuation of what has become a well-entrenched tradition and we hope to bring fellow South Africans together to share and engage with some inspiring art.”

Among others, works from Irma Stern, William Kentridge, Anton van Wouw, Edoardo Villa, Kenneth Bakker, Christo Coetzee, Francois Krige and Pieter Hugo Naudé will be exhibited.

Oliewenhuis-kunsmuseum persvrystelling
