'Homing', a Photographic Assemble at KZNSA
By a Correspondent

A group exhibition of new work by twelve Durban-based photographers.

10 May – 28 May 2011

Home, any shelter that is the usual residence of a person; the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered; the dwelling place or retreat of an animal; the place or region where something is most common; any place of refuge or residence; a principal base of operations or activities. Where the heart is.

Twelve Durban-based artists have teamed up to present a body of new photographic work surrounding the theme of ‘Homing’. The artists have each taken a unique and individualistic approach to their interpretation of ‘Homing’. What distinguishes this exhibition is the wide range of intentions and modes of presentation that the members of the group have chosen to show their work.

From an installation of light-boxes to digital prints on paper, a sculptural installation of a street ‘spaza’ and large-scale photographs printed on wallpaper and glued to the gallery walls, this is no regular documentary photographic exhibition.

An important component will be presented in the Mezzanine Gallery.  Working with members of the group, Durban street photographers were mentored to develop participatory work with our city’s vulnerable young people who are most often perceived to be ‘homeless’.

Participating artists are: Andrew Griffin, Troy Inman, Harry Lock, Peter McKenzie, Neith Moore, Michele Silk, Lanel Janse van Vuuren, Thulani Welcome Ngcobo, Ernest Siphiwe Mthembu, Vincent Musa Chala, Thulani Derrick Mbhele, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Shangazi.
