The LaBa! Street Art Festival is the only festival of its kind in Uganda. On 4th June 2011, starting at 11am till midnight, Mackinnon Road between Kafu Road and Sezibwa Road in Nakasero will be the place to be. More than 85 exhibitors as well as 200 performing artists from Uganda and East Africa will come together to celebrate 365 ... DAYS OF ART. Once again, interactive projects as well as art installations and performances will engage an expected gathering of 5000 spectators in the 5th LaBa! Street Art Festival.

Each year provides 365 days to create something new; each day of a year can be a challenge – and gives the opportunity for success! Thinking along these lines, artists will incorporate this year's LaBa! theme in their installations, performances and paintings. Thus, they will show different approaches to art in everyday life. Creativity, struggle and success all belong together.

The story of the LaBa! is a story of success. Starting in 2007 with the slogan “Pot in the Hole” – a tribute to the numerous potholes on Bukoto Street - artists and spectators were invited to transform the concrete into art; playfully, artistically and colorfully.

This year’s LaBa! will feature more artists and performances than ever before. An enormous creative community of painters, sculptors, fashion and jewelry designers, dancers, photographers, actors and musicians will turn Mackinnon Road into an open-air-art-space of creativity. Everyone is invited not only to see but to participate.

Starting from 11 am the street will be filled with performances like stick walking, comedy, HipHop/breackdance and martial art groups. A fashion show can be enjoyed by Uganda's finest and internationally acclaimed designer Stella Atal. At a performance art space, visitors will be able to enjoy poetry, music, drumming, Capoeira, Breakdance and many more.

Besides interactive art projects, which will be open for everyone to participate, there will also be exciting children's programmes to ensure an all-round enjoyment.

The Language Bazar “Language Without Borders” creates a different experience for its visitors. They can interact in games, being entertained by performances and/or learn where and how they can learn such languages like German, French, Italian, Greek, Spanish and many more in Kampala.

At sunset, the festival will move to the garden side of Goethe-Zentrum and Alliance Francaise to enjoy the best of contemporary Ugandan music scene. Artists like Lillian (Blue3) and the Sundowners, Mista Poa, Carl Joshua Ncube from Zimbabwe and many more will give us an unforgettable musical experience.

Art presents an opportunity for everyone to express themselves and their concerns – and it empowers people to follow their own ideas. The LaBa! wants to encourage people to get involved with – and experience art. No matter who – artists, families, business men, students, young and old, men and women – everyone is welcome to contribute!

As Amy Lowell (1874 - 1925) once said : “Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in” , The LaBa! Street Art Festival 2011 will make it happen!

Entrance is free, with secure and ample parking available.
