'Fieri di leggere', Italy Seeks to Promote African Children's Literature and Illustration.
Press Release | Milena Albertin (Fieri di leggere Project Coordinator)
Since 1983, the Cooperativa Giannino Stoppani and the Giannino Stoppani children's bookstore in Bologna have been working to promote children's literature and illustration as well as children's book reading in Italy and abroad.

An Illustration From ABC Africa Books Children, 2011
Every year, they organize 'Fieri di leggere', an initiative that starts during the Bologna International Children's Bookfair and lasts two months. It includes solo and group exhibits of children's illustrators from all over the world, meetings with artists, publishers and writers, workshops and public readings dedicated to children and children's culture.

A standout feature of the 'Fieri di leggere 2010' programme was the exhibition of William Wilson's textile artworks for his book Ocean noir and a series of workshops held by the Tanzanian 'Tinga Tinga' artist John Kilaka.
The 2011 edition focused more sharply on African Children's literature and illustration with the project ABC Africa Books Children, an exhibition of children's books from and about Africa.

The intent for next year is to give a further impulse to this project. The Illustrators Exhibition of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair offers a prestigious showcase for children’s illustration at a world level.
Therefore all established African artists and illustrators, art students, art schools, and emerging talents are invited to take part in the international competition that will result in the above mentioned Illustrators Exhibition of the 2012 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The original artworks will be selected by an authoritative international jury consisting of publishers, artists and museum directors.

For further information about the rules of entry please visit the Bologna International Children's Bookfair website.
The Illustrators Exhibition represents not only a great chance for the international public of professionals to widen their perspective on the multifaceted African artistic universe, but it is also an unique occasion for young African artists and illustrators to gain visibility on a worldwide basis.
