Goethe-Institut Nigeria Presents 'Beyond Football - Shifting Interests and Identity'
Press Release | SAVVY Contemporary/Goethe-Institut Nigeria

The discourse regarding women and gender is one of the pivotal topics that have captured the imagination of social and political critics in recent decades. Whether in politics, economics or in the educational sphere, the place of women in today’s society is still a contested issue.

Beyond Football-Shifting Interests and Identity

As part of the events commemorating the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup tournament in Germany, Goethe-Institut Nigeria commissioned artworks on these topics by artists from Nigeria, South Africa and Germany.

Through the prism of football the exhibition 'Beyond Football – Shifting Interests and Identity', which will be curated by multi-media German-Nigerian artist, Emeka Udemba, interrogates issues of family, gender, sexuality, discrimination, fashion and life-style in contemporary African and German societies .

This exhibition will see six Nigerian visual artists will team up with artists from Germany and South Africa to expose their views on women football

The first part of this exhibition will take place in Berlin, at the SAVVY-Contemporary Gallery (June 25 – July 8) and then come to Lagos ,at the Goethe-Institut, Nigeria in time for the finals of the Worldcup (July 16 – 29).

The project’s intent is not to overturn the multiple axes of stratification affecting women. Nonetheless, this exhibition provides a platform to negotiate, challenge, disrupt, deconstruct, re-construct and question entrenched ideas on gender. The exhibition will be accompanied by an exclusive catalogue.

SAVVY Contemporary is an independent art space in Berlin, Germany that aims at reflecting on and fostering the discourse at eye's length between "Western” and "Non-Western" arts and cultures.
