Victor Ekpuk Features in 'Drawing Analogies' at the Athenaeum, Virginia
By a Correspondent

Victor Ekpuk at The-ATHENAUEM

Drawing Analogies assembles a dynamic group of artists who create nontraditional drawings as a means of exploring and understanding their environments. Utilizing the building blocks of drawing—medium, method, and line—they venture beyond the expected to deliver statements in bold, fresh voices. The results are more like ‘drawing’
than even the classic definition of drawing.

Of particular interest to Nigerian artist Victor Ekpuk's project is Nsibidi, an indigenous African system of writing that employs graphic signs, and codes to convey concepts.

He says, "Inspired by this ancient writings, forms in my works are reduced to basic essence resulting in new symbols or codes in script-like drawings that are used to express contemporary experiences. When combined with Nsibidi signs, these 'scripts' also provide the background narrative to my compositions. Most often these narrative are better perceived when they are felt rather than read literally."
