Contested Terrains: A Panel Discussion Brought To You By Level 2 Gallery, London
Press Release | Tate Modern

Contested Terrains artists Kader Attia, Michael MacGarry and Adolphus Opara discuss the ideas and processes behind their work with exhibition curators Kerryn Greenberg, Jude Anogwih and Bolanle Austen-Peters, Managing Director/CEO, Terra Kulture. The discussion will touch upon the role of research in artistic practice and of art in mediating the past and present. The exhibition runs from 29th July - 16th October, 2011.

Adolphus Opara's Orisa Egbe Deity of Destiny (Mrs Osun Yita) from 'Emissaries of an Iconic Religion', 2009 | Courtesy of Tate Modern

Adolphus Opara was born in Imo State, Nigeria in 1981 and now lives and works in Lagos. His photographic portraits of Nigerian diviners, posed in the manner of classic Victorian portraiture, act as a confident riposte to colonial representations of African spirituality.

Michael MacGarry was born in Durban, South Africa in 1978 and now lives and works in Cape Town. MacGarry investigates the ongoing ramifications of imperialism in Africa in all his works. Of particular interest to him are the mechanics of control and vested interests that inform the transfer of ideas, values and products from the so-called ‘centre’ to the ‘periphery’ and vice versa, via established global trade routes.

Kader Attia was born in Dugny, France in 1970 and now lives and works in Berlin and Algiers. Attia’s work tackles questions of immigration, globalisation and religion in a variety of disciplines. His work featured in the Contested Terrains exhibition explores the interconnectedness between the past and the present, Africa and the rest of the world while reflecting on the unquantifiable costs of war and the limitations of repair.
