Buying and collecting art is an exciting voyage of discovery – a complex investment that involves the coming together of a mixture of aesthetic, emotional and financial instincts.

To help buyers and collectors navigate some of the pitfalls and perils, the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) and Artright will be hosting a number of leading industry professionals at Joburg Art Fair 2011, who will be providing free advice to art buyers and collectors on a variety of important legal, financial and technical considerations in the collecting of art.

Whether you are a first-time buyer or in the process of building a serious collection, no question is too silly to ask! See below for the details of who will be manning the helpdesk at what times:

Art and Cultural Property Law for the Art Collector, Inheritor or Donor – Toby Orford

Toby Orford is a lawyer practicing as a consultant specialising in the field of art and cultural property. Orford will be at the VANSA stand at the times below to answer any of your questions relating to intellectual property, dispute resolution, taxation and arts and cultural property law more generally.

Art Insurance for the Owner and Collector – Gordon Massie and Therese Alvares

Art Insure is a specialist underwriting manager, focused on the insurance needs of the art and antiques world. Conservancy and Restoration for the Owner and Collector – Ernest Bellingan

Ernest Bellingan is a restorer and conservator who specialises in the conservation and restoration of works on paper, oil on canvas and board as well as acrylic. Bellingan has worked with major galleries, auction houses, private collectors and dealers.
