Miguel Petchkovsky -- Mixed Media
Artist Profile

Miguel Petchkovsky
He started his artistic career in 1980 as a filmmaker for the AIC - Angolan Cinema Instute. From 1987 until 1992 he studied painting at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After his studies he experienced a wide range of other creative areas, such as photography, sculpture and conceptual installations. Petchkovsky frequently uses recycled objects and materials in his works. African life or history is often symbolized or implied in his works.
His videos about culture and cultural identity are one such occassion that are framed by the symbolized need of his character to return to Africa. His installations are of a modernist genre and challenge traditional borders. In his paintings and objects we find the influence of Schwitters and Rauschenberg, and the sarcasm and irony of Duchamps. Art catching the moment - experiences, memories and expectations frozen in time - is not a definition of human experience, but of the experience itself.
