Olonde Omondi (1976) -- Cartoons

Artist Profile

The world of today is in constant economic, political and social transition. It is a situation which deeply influences the life and art of Olonde  Omondi.

A holder of a Diploma in Graphic Design, Omondi enjoys expressing himself in a variety of styles all based on realistic interpretation of our world. Major areas of interest include Cartoons and Caricature,  Graphic Art and Illustration as well as Painting. Art History and Poetry also play substantial roles in my Art.

Omondi was born March of 1976 in Nyanza Province in the Western region of Kenya. The abundant black cotton soils of the area provided the basic material for his first form of expression as a child , modeling. In Nursery  School, this immediately translated itself into a love of Drawing that still dominates him to date.

A decision to become an Artist was made while in High School when he joined Maseno School Writers Club to be their Chief Cartoonist in 1993. It was at the same time that he began to attend Art classes.

A major turning point was in 2002 when he joined Mombasa Polytechnic for a Diploma in Graphic design. It was here that he came face to face with Art History and discovered the contribution of Art to humanity.  Immediately he was challenged with the possibility of Art as a career. In his time at the Polytechnic, he participated and won a Poster Competition organized by The German Embassy in Kenya.  The choice of Art as career was sealed.

Further encouragement came again in 2006 during Haki Ya Kalamu contest for cartoonists by KATUNI East Africa and The Standard Newspapers. One of Olonde's cartoons was selected as the best political cartoon in Week 6 of the competition.

Today, Olonde does Illustrations, Cartoons, Sign making, Clay sculptures, Comic books, Murals and Painting in Oils and Watercolors. His work also is currently featured in The Management Magazine by The Kenya Institute of Management.
