Olutayo Aje (1966) -- Fine Art

Artist Profile

Olutayo Aje

Olutayo Aje

I decided to venture into a career in visual arts in 1983 after completing my primary and secondary education, that saw me excel at little else than producing scores of little sketches all over my subject notes, class desks, and indeed any space I could find to draw on (including the air).

Luckily, I had the encouragement of an art teacher at both levels, and so it was not a difficult decision to develop my skills further at the university.

I decided to be an artist because I have always been fascinated with the endless possibilities of what the creative soul, mind and body can produce from little or nothing.

What am up to now

I am interested in diverting my art towards the direction of identity. This has to do with the search for Africans in the Diaspora. Who is the African? Who was he/she? Who will they be? Where are they now? What are they doing? Where are they going? Why? How will they get there? When will they get there?

My project ‘Art of the Identity’ will focus on post-modern themes, experimental techniques, printmaking, and other mixed traditional and experimental media to develop visual art in 2D and 3D. Visual Semiotics is a very important part of my art and this workshop will enable me explore and experiment more with the original language of the human soul: art.

My art is a wake-up call to the world to look forward to a glorious future and unexplored potential that Africa represents through its rich, redeemable and reviving culture.
