Artist Profile

Victoria Udondian

Several idealogies of ‘transformations’ motivates my creating arts with much of my inspiration steming from the envionment I live. Concerns to my artworks are social themes which focus on human activities which are linked to culture, environments, history, and politics. My choice of material is dependent on the theme to be addressed. Therefore, I prefer to tackle themes using diverse materials without limiting my works to just one material.

I am currently focused on issues on fashion and identity. A close look at the African clothing reveals that traditions of African culture can be read through their clothing. The design on textiles usually has meaning. They contain philosophies, wisdom, histories and classification. These fabrics function like a languague,a means of communication.

I am convinced that there exist some consequences on the perception of ones identity when the language of the fabrics one wears is changed fundamentally. Based on this, I make an attempt; on the basis of arguments, pros and cons, stuidies on this issue and my experiences to generate critical discourse. These subjects I approach from different perspectives trying to examine clothing as a mechanism to communicate and reveal elements of my identity.
